What is Answer Engine Optimisation (AEO), and why it's changing search forever

For twenty years, getting found meant ranking on page one of Google. That's shifting. More of your customers now ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google's AI Overviews instead, and they get one confident answer back rather than ten blue links to choose from.

That one change rewrites how you get found online. Here's what AEO is, why it's taking off now, and what it means for whether your business shows up.

What Answer Engine Optimisation means

Answer Engine Optimisation is how you make sure your business is the answer an AI gives. SEO got your pages to rank in a list of results. AEO gets your content understood, trusted and quoted by the AI doing the answering.

The gap between those two is bigger than it sounds. A ranking puts you on a page of options and leaves the searcher to click around and compare. An AI answer skips the page of options. It names two or three businesses, sometimes one, and most people take that shortlist as read. Miss the shortlist and you miss the click, because there's no list of ten to scroll through any more.

What's changed in how people search

Search used to be a three-step job. You typed a question, you got links, you picked one. Now a growing share of searches end with the answer itself and no click to any website at all. Someone asks for the best caterer in Surrey, or how to bring down their energy bill, and the assistant hands over a worked answer on the spot.

Ask ChatGPT to recommend a supplier in almost any industry and you'll see it for yourself. It won't point you at a directory. It gives you a couple of names and a reason for each, and the person reading usually starts with the first one mentioned.

Why a strong Google ranking doesn't cover you

This is the part that catches people out. You can sit at the top of Google for your main keyword and still go missing when an AI answers the same question, because the two systems decide what to show in different ways.

When an AI weighs up who to name, it leans on signals a ranking doesn't guarantee: consistent information about you across your site, directories and reviews, third-party mentions it already trusts, and content that reads like it was written by someone who knows the subject. A page can rank well and still give an AI very little to quote. If that's your page, you're missing from the channel growing fastest.

What AEO involves in practice

Most of the work is about being clear and being credible, in a form a machine can read.

You write content that answers the real questions your customers ask, in plain, quotable language. You structure your pages with clean headings, schema markup and short summaries an engine can lift without guessing. You build authority signals over time, things like reviews, citations and the same name, services and location showing up consistently wherever you appear. And you show real expertise, the kind only someone who does the work can write, so the AI treats you as a source worth repeating.

None of it is a trick. It's the same clarity and credibility that's always made good content work, pointed at a new reader: the machine deciding who to recommend.

AEO doesn't replace your SEO

Traditional search still drives real traffic, and it will for a good while yet. The two jobs overlap far more than they compete. The clarity, authority and structure that earn you AI citations are the same things that strengthen your rankings, so the work pays off twice. There's no real choice to make between them. The same foundations serve both.

The window is open right now

Many of your competitors haven't moved on this yet. The ones who do first become the names an AI keeps reaching for, while everyone else carries on optimising for a results page fewer people read each year. Being early pays off for a long time here, because once an AI has learned to treat you as a reliable source, it keeps pointing people your way.

We've shifted our own strategy to lead here. We help you become the answer.
